Bathroom installation dimensions The perfect height for washbasins, WCs and more
The correct installation height for washbasins and toilets is critical to user comfort.
Everyone is different, so it is important to adjust the height of WCs and washbasins to the individual requirements and body size of the users. A WC that is mounted too low can make it harder to get up, while one that is too high is uncomfortable. If a washbasin is mounted too low, you constantly need to bend over, which can cause back pain and lead to poor posture.
Unless instructed otherwise, plumbers will install sanitary appliances at the following standard heights:
| Sanitary appliance | Height of upper edge | Height of bottom edge |
|---|---|---|
| WC | 41–42 cm (without WC seat) | – |
| Actuator plates | Centre at approx. 100 cm | – |
| Washbasin | 85–95 cm | – |
| Mirror cabinet | 200–220 cm | 100–125 cm |

Installation height in private bathrooms: It comes down to your preference
There are no binding regulations in private bathrooms, only guidelines based on local standards and ergonomic recommendations. However, these standard dimensions can be adapted as required to increase everyday comfort.
If you would prefer different installation heights from the standard dimensions, you should discuss this in advance with the plumbing company or design office and reach a binding agreement.
We also recommend reminding the plumbers about this agreement shortly before they start the installation to make sure that the agreed heights are implemented. A quick on-site check can also help avoid adjustments or rework at a later date.

Optimum installation heights: more tips
The optimum height of washbasins, toilets, bathroom mirrors and other sanitary appliances depends on various factors, particularly the height and any physical limitations of the users.
The current standards are usually ideal for people who are around 176 cm tall. However, if you are significantly taller, you will quickly notice that a washbasin height of 80 cm, for example, is too low.
The standard height can also be unsuitable for toilets: If the toilet is hung too low, you sit hunched over rather than comfortably, which, although anatomically beneficial, makes it harder to stand up.
Tip: When planning or renovating a bathroom, you need to consider not only suitable installation dimensions but also the required distances between individual sanitary appliances and movement areas. Getting clearances right ensures bathrooms are comfortable and ergonomic to use every day.

How high should a washbasin be installed?
The general rule for washbasins is that the upper edge should be between 85 and 90 cm from the floor. However, special requirements may apply depending on user needs.
We recommend adjusting the installation height as required for children and elderly people to ensure both comfort and safety.
If the washbasin needs to be accessible, you must allow access underneath, i.e. make sure that there is enough legroom for wheelchair users underneath the washbasin. This can influence the shape of the washbasin or the design of the substructure, though not necessarily the installation height itself.

How high should a toilet be mounted?
The ideal installation height for traditional toilets and shower toilets is between 41 and 42 cm (without WC seat). WCs for children should be around 30 cm, while accessible toilets between 45 and 49 cm in height make sitting down and standing up easier.
Wall-hung WCs are attached using a prewall installation, whereas floor-standing WCs are screwed firmly into the floor.
Your sanitary professional can help you select and adapt suitable heights.

How high should the WC flush plate be installed?
A flush plate should be fitted right above the centre of the toilet so that it is easy to reach. The recommended standard height is 100 cm (Centre of the flush plate).
The final installation height for flush actuation depends on the cistern, which is positioned out of sight behind the wall. This is because the flush plate is attached to this hidden cistern.

How high should a mirror be mounted?
The ideal installation height for the bathroom mirror depends on its size and the people who will use it. The aim is for everyone to be able to see themselves comfortably, without having to bend down or stretch.
As a rule of thumb, the centre of the mirror should be roughly at eye level. However, this can vary depending on the size of the mirror:
- Smaller mirrors up to 60 cm in height: Eye level in the centre of the mirror
- Larger mirrors from 70 cm in height: Eye level around a third below the top edge
- Full-body mirrors from 100 cm in height: Eye level around a quarter below the top edge
Tip: Hang the bathroom mirror so that the bottom edge is around 15 to 20 cm above the washbasin to avoid splashing it with water.
Moreover, a floor-standing mirror does not have to be full-length. When tilted backwards slightly, it reflects the entire body perfectly.
What is the ideal installation height for a urinal?
The ideal installation height for a urinal depends on the target group. While the front edge of a urinal should typically be between 65 to 70 cm for adults, a height of 45 to 55 cm is recommended for children.
In public places, a combination of various heights can be useful to cater to different user groups.
