A stadium like Nike's crown National athletics stadium Budapest (HU)

The Budapest Southgate district on the Danube is getting a new look. The national athletics stadium is the first step in this project. The design strikes a balance between hosting major events and public use.

A national athletics stadium for major international events and at the same time a place for public physical activity for everyone: the requirements for the project in Budapest's Southgate neighbourhood were complex.

The stadium is the first new building in the master plan to revitalise this former industrial district of the Hungarian capital. And it has become a proverbial royal project for the local NAPUR architects. The structural supports are arranged to form a white crown and the roof arches elegantly over them like a laurel wreath. Entirely in the spirit of Nike, the ancient goddess of sport.

To ensure that the aesthetics were not compromised, the roof drainage pipes had to run inside the relatively narrow beams. The space-saving Geberit Pluvia roof drainage system easily met the requirements.

A sports arena for everyone

The stadium can now hold 35,000 spectators when major events takes place – such as the 2023 World Athletics Championships in the opening year. Part of the seating is movable, allowing the public to freely use significant portions of the stadium outside of major events.

The “Open City Ring“ is a wide platform halfway up the stadium, accessible around the clock, featuring a running and jogging track, equipment for street workouts, and other training areas.

This is a world first: the national athletics stadium in Budapest is the only “open arena“ in the world that is available to everyone 365 days a year.
