DIY SOS: Geberit Mapress Copper
Geberit was able to help the BBC DIY SOS team make a local project become a reality recently by supplying pipe fittings and tools to the site. The DIY SOS team set out to renovate a rundown youth centre in a deprived area of Liverpool for an hour-long one-off special for the BBC’s Children In Need charity.

Geberit leapt at the chance to contribute to this inspirational project, which is the programme’s biggest Big Build Challenge to date. The company provided not only a whole host of Geberit Mapress Copper pipework fittings, but also specialist Geberit Mapress pressing tools and a collar set for the heating and water pipe work, and sent a skilled company representative to train volunteer British Gas plumbers, new to pressing, to fit the pipes correctly. The project required the removal of the old heating system and all the pipe work, and the installation of a completely new central heating system with 28 radiators and over 400m of pipe.
With such a mammoth task ahead, Geberit’s Mapress press fit jointing system was the ideal solution. The pipe and fittings are pressed together using specialist pressing tools rather than using conventional methods like soldering; slashing installation time dramatically. With the correct tools and installer training, the Geberit Mapress pressing method is far quicker and simpler than traditional jointing methods and can be performed on site, even in tight spaces. Despite the fact that the British Gas plumbers were given a seemingly impossible deadline, the Geberit Mapress system and their training from Geberit gave them the confidence to tackle the job head on, and to finish on time.

For this project the DIY SOS team were relying purely on the goodwill of local tradesmen and businesses to make the project happen, a job which would normally take 8 months to complete and with an estimated budget of £1m. Builder Mark Millar, who visited the site before filming started in September, called on Merseysiders to help. Mark said: “With the help of the community, tradesmen and companies, we intend to fully refurbish and extend the centre to provide better facilities. The task is huge. We’ve got eight days to build it, one day to decorate it and one day to reveal it to the staff.”
Speaking from the busy 1,800 sq ft site, DIY SOS presenter Nick Knowles said to a local newspaper: “We are trying to give people like Glenn [Campbell, senior youth worker] the tools he needs to rescue this generation of young people. If we can give teenagers an opportunity and a sense of empowerment, it will change their life forever. Hopefully we can show our 6m viewers why it is it important to support places like the centre.”
