Geberit, the leading manufacturer of sanitary, supply and HDPE drainage systems, has provided several of its products for the construction of the recently opened Westfield London Shopping Centre in White City. The £1.7bn project, which covers 43 acres and comprises more than 265 shops, a 14 screen cinema and 4,500 parking spaces, called for a highly efficient drainage and waste system.
Geberit’s Pluvia Siphonic drainage system was an ideal solution for rapid removal of the large quantities of rainwater produced by the centre's vast roof areas. The system has been used in major building projects throughout the world due to the freedom and flexibility it offers to Architects and Contractors. Pluvia uses an ingenious gravity induced vacuum principle to create a siphonic action, which allows the complete drainage of a roof area with smaller diameter pipes than used in a conventional system.
Geberit HDPE soil and waste piping systems were used throughout Westfield London to provide an effective drainage solution. The lightweight and flexible properties of the product enabled sections to be prefabricated in a safe, controlled environment prior to installation on site.
Geberit’s technical team worked closely with leading plumbing contractors, Stanfield Building Services of Stoke on Trent and its Managing Director, Chris Buckley, to provide a solution based service for what happens to be their biggest job undertaken in the UK so far. This ensured that the challenges presented by such a large building project were met and resulted in an efficient drainage system which proved much easier to install than more traditional methods.
Chris Buckley of Stanfield commented “The siphonic solution to drain the roof was the only solution available, given the challenging complexity of the project. We received excellent technical back-up from Geberit throughout and the supply of product was maintained during the 18 month installation period, allowing us to deliver the project on time.”
In a totally different application, around 100 Geberit infra-red WC flush controls were installed throughout the centre’s washroom facilities. The HyTronic automatic flush plates in stainless steel have a sensor that registers the user’s presence or detects the proximity of the user’s hand and flushes the WC.
