So Good, Sovent
Geberit, the European leaders in pipework and sanitary systems have now cleared the way for integration of their Sovent fitting to the UK market. This fitting has been tried and tested in thousands of installations Worldwide for over 40 years, but like many innovative products has met with typical British conservatism. Having now been successfully evaluated by the British Board of Agreement and pending award of final certification, specifiers and installers can have complete confidence in this clever and higher effective solution to traditional branch and waste connections to vertical stacks.

Sovent is a patented single stack drainage system that substantially improves the performance of a soil & waste drainage system, increasing its capacity, enabling the elimination of separate vent stacks and reducing the diameter of stacks in high-rise buildings thereby saving space.

The Sovent system is particularly effective for buildings of over 5-storeys such as hotels, laboratories, industrial plant and other high-rise buildings where it can create considerable cost savings as well as enhanced drainage performance.

The Sovent fitting itself is engineered in HDPE and is therefore directly integrated within Geberit HDPE drainage systems. The design concept of Sovent is that it eliminates the need for separate vent stacks by reducing the maximum flow velocity in the discharge stack compared to that in a normal installation, slowing the flow as it passes through each Sovent fitting. The benefit of this being to reduce air pressure fluctuations in the stack reducing the need for secondary vent stack normally needed to prevent the siphonage of traps connected to appliances.

The hydraulic and pneumatic balancing of a stack system is highly complex as each stack has its own characteristics and the capacity of the stack depends on the flow rate of the appliance, their simultaneous discharge pattern and the branch inlet configurations. The positive and negative pressures have to be limited in order to maintain the water seals in the traps and therefore retain a healthy environment with no unpleasant smells. As a result venting can be managed by the use of a Sovent fitting on each floor.

The reduction of stack sizes compared to a secondary ventilated system is best illustrated by example that a typical 110mm Sovent stack could accommodate twice as many apartments per stack when using the Sovent system.

Sovent is designed with six capped off connection positions with the optimum installation configuration determined for each situation. The rub-off connections are made by opening the relevant mouled closure using a fine tooth saw. HDPE pipework or fitting can then be directly butt welded to the Sovent body.

In addition to its cost saving and improved performance, a Sovent system saves space and offers versatility of branch joining positions for easier onsite pre-fabrication. Sovent, like the rest of the Geberit HDPE range, is maintenance free and offers improved acoustic performance, can be further enhanced with Geberit sound installation accessories.

Sovent has been proved over many years in various countries where relevant standards exist. The system requires to be installed to meet national regulations and Sovent is included in several such standards including DIN EN 12056-2. It is also satisfying the needs of many prestigious projects in various parts of the world such as Zurich Twin Towers Commercial Centre, Benidorms Hotel Gran Bali (the tallest hotel in Europe), Montreal’s Hyatt regency Hotel and the Arabella Sheraton 19-storey hotel in Cape Town.

Sovent is the ideal solution for high rise large scale projects where cost and convenience are major considerations.
