The Wales Millennium Centre is considered the most important arts development in Europe today and will be a world-class venue for a variety of performing arts especially theatre, ballet, opera and dance. The design of this building is already attracting much favourable architectural comment with its blend of cutting edge design and innovative use of materials. It reflects the Welsh landscape and culture in its application of colours, textures and natural materials and is designed as a series of linked buildings with a fly tower as a focal point landmark.
Sustainability and low maintenance are specific requirements of the building with Geberit HDPE pipework chosen as the modern material for soil and waste drainage and for the specially designed rainwater drainage systems. Preferred to cast iron after a wide ranging value engineering study, Geberit HDPE pipework was specified by specialist mechanical engineering company SGD of Stoke on Trent for its cost saving and many other benefits.
“Its low weight makes it exceptionally easy to handle on site and to install” say SGD Managing Director Chris Buckley “it gives total joint integrity, has a full range of fittings and can be electronically jointed by butt welding or sleeve couplings which ensure there are no problems whatsoever at the testing stage. Geberit HDPE pipework is our choice for larger, more complex projects every time.”
The Wales Millennium Centre has a very large drainage requirement, which comprises 7-storeys with numerous vertical stacks serving all the general public washroom area.
HDPE pipework was also preferred for the rainwater drainage requirement with its installation flexibility advantages accommodating the complex roof design and for its compatibility with soil and waste drainage material.
The Wales Millennium Centre will be a flagship for Wales in terms of its innovation and appealing design and the excellence and breadth of its arts facilities and programmes.
Geberit HDPE pipework will ensure that soil and waste drainage is performing just as well behind the scenes.
